Family Counseling
Family counseling services focus on helping parents, children, and everyone in the family resolve problems, improve communications, and face challenges together.
The definition of “family” has changed with the times. Today, children may have two sets of parents if their biological parents divorce and remarry. They may be raised by their grandparents, aunts, uncles, or foster parents. They may find themselves with new step-siblings and in situations they never thought they would encounter. It’s helpful to have a supportive, neutral, confidential counselor to help work through the many challenges the new family unit faces.
While individual counseling is important, within a family, the relationships and bonds that connect individuals add a unique dimension to family counseling that sets it apart from individual therapy. Family counseling treats the whole family unit, not just an individual, and develops, supports, and strengthens communications and relationships in a family.
Supportive Family Counseling
Family of Hands offers support, guidance, encouragement and healing for families. Parents will find a confidential mentor to work through relationship problems, co-parenting needs, or issues relating to divorce, illness, and other stressors on their relationship. Children and teens will learn how to communicate with their parents and how to work together as a family rather than face their hurts and fears alone.
We meet with families from South Boston, Danville, Martinsville, Pittsylvania and Henry Counties to work through a variety of situations. Some reasons that families choose to work with us include:
- Divorce and remarriage of one or both parents
- Children with emotional or behavioral issues
- Sexual orientation
- Blended families, adoption, fostering
- Illness, death, or incarceration of a parent or parents
- Communication issues or ‘acting out’
